Vitamin D deficiency and how it affects COVID-19

Vitamin D deficiency and how it affects COVID-19

Almost 50% of the United States is lacking in Vitamin D, a critical vitamin that affects everything from mood to immunity. Endocrine Society published a recent study that shows Europe suffers from the same deficiency. The study took place in Spain and looked at 200 COVID-19 patients. They found that 80% were lacking Vitamin D. The patients who were Vitamin D deficient had elevated levels of inflammatory markers including d-dimer and ferritin.

How is Vitamin D made in the body?

Vitamin D is generated by the kidneys to balance blood calcium concentrations and has a serious effect on the function of their immune system. Being deficient in this vitamin has been tied to reduced protection against infections.

Vitamin D could have benefits against COVID-19

A co-author of this study, Jose Hernandez, Ph.D., believes COVID-19 patients who are deficient in Vitamin D should have that vitamin incorporated in their treatment plan. "This approach might have beneficial effects in both the musculoskeletal and the immune system", he says.

There are many different foods to help elevate your Vitamin D levels, such as consuming fatty fish, mushrooms, egg yolks and fortified foods! For some people, it's easier to take a Vitamin D supplement, to ensure they are consuming the right amount of Vitamin D. Check out Mybite's chocolatey Vitamin D supplement to help with immune support, strong bones and a happy mood!
