Can vitamin D help defend against COVID-19?
Lowering blood pressure, happier mood, and strong bones, oh my! Vitamin D has a long list of benefits, and it looks like it has another ace in its pocket – lowering the risk of getting COVID-19.
A study conducted at the University of Chicago explored the correlation between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 test results.
The researchers found that patients with low levels of vitamin D, or deficiencies, were 77% more likely to test positive for the novel coronavirus.
Vitamin D and your immune system
The study examined the test results of 489 University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) patients whose vitamin D levels were measured less than one year before being tested for COVID-19.
“It’s important to the function of the immune system and supplements have previously been shown to lower the risk of viral respiratory tract infections,” Dr. David Meltzer, Chief of Hospital Medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine and lead author of the study noted. “Our statistical analysis suggests this may be true for the COVID-19 infection.”
